Life in the World to Come

A large-scale nuclear war was supposed to end the world. But the Cold War went hot, the Americans and the Soviets lobbed warheads first at force concentrations and then at cities, Europe was devastated, and still the promised endless winter never came.

The world was supposed to end, but here it is -- still spinning. And even as the last battered forces of the old regimes thrash against each other in their death throes, the survivors emerge blinking in the light. Two of those survivors are Janek and Alexey, deserters from the Soviet mechanized corps with their battered BMP-2. Do they still belong to the old world, or is there a place for them in the new?
