Forty years ago, Captain Maya Tem ran afoul of the most famous naval family in the Portal Stars. Ever since, she's been assigned to the commands the Naval Department can't find anyone else willing to take - like escorting colonization ships to empty systems flagged as possible colony sites. It's a safe job. And a boring one. And one with no opportunities for promotion. 

Or so Maya thinks. But what she and her ship, the Half-Hearted Hologram, find on their latest journey may just net her that promotion after all...
